Mindfulness for Seniors
The first noble truth…
Life is full of suffering, and none of us are immune. This is the first of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths. Alright, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but you don’t have to be a Buddhist to agree that there’s not a person alive who’s life is 100% stress free.
Recognizing emotional and physical distress as part of the universal human experience can help take some of the shame out of it. No matter how strong we are, no matter how much life we have already experienced, there will always be new experiences that will challenge us. The good news is that meditation can help! Instead of trying to fix our problems, mindfulness practices can help us better process and relate to our struggles.
But why mindfulness for seniors?
Special circumstances call for specialized care.
Meditation is all the rage these days, especially amongst the younger generations. However, mindfulness practice can be particularly beneficial for older adults. Here are just a few common age-related challenges meditation can help address:
Managing chronic aches and pains
Combating insomnia and improving sleep quality
Improving digestion and reducing acid-reflux
Lowering blood pressure and the risk of heart attack/stroke
Boosting the immune system and reducing the likelihood of serious infection
Processing major life transitions, such as retirement or becoming a grandparent
Coping with significant changes in your own or a loved one’s health status
Navigating grief and loss
Does this sound like you or someone else in your life? Then you or your loved one could probably benefit from practicing meditation.
Here’s the problem though: most meditation teachers and centers aren’t providing practices that address these specific needs. Instead, most are catering to the younger generations, trying to cope with school, raising a family, and/or working demanding corporate jobs. But your struggles likely aren’t to do with a high-stress lifestyle or a shortage of time to sit and meditate. Where are the meditation teachers specifically thinking about your needs?
The unfortunate truth, is that seniors are severely overlooked and underserved in the wellness and mental health industries. That’s why I’m so passionate about filling that gap through my mindfulness services, designed to specifically address common challenges that come with life’s later decades. I work directly with you to create a meditation program that support your unique goals and needs.
“Aging is not about how many years have passed, but how much life you’ve embraced.”

My standard meditation class is 30 minutes in length, with around 15-20 minutes dedicated to formal meditation practice and 10-15 minutes set aside at the end for reflection and integration exercises. However, I am happy to provide shorter or longer classes and/or offer a different ratio of meditation vs. reflection practice to suit your preferences.
